Job Description

Mercy Corps is seeking dedicated and meticulous individuals to join our team as Data Collectors – Survey Field, based in Goma, North Kivu Province. This critical role is essential to the success of our monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) efforts, directly contributing to the evidence-based design and implementation of our humanitarian and development programs across the region. As a Data Collector, you will be the eyes and ears on the ground, responsible for gathering high-quality, accurate, and reliable data directly from beneficiaries and communities affected by crisis and poverty. Your work will directly inform our understanding of community needs, program effectiveness, and impact, ensuring that Mercy Corps interventions are relevant, efficient, and truly transformative.

You will be tasked with conducting various forms of data collection, including structured household surveys, in-depth interviews with key informants, and facilitating focus group discussions within diverse and sometimes challenging environments. This is a field-intensive position requiring a strong commitment to ethical data collection practices, excellent interpersonal skills to build rapport with community members, and the ability to navigate various cultural contexts with sensitivity and respect. You will utilize digital data collection tools, primarily on tablets or smartphones, ensuring data is captured efficiently and accurately in real-time. Training on specific tools and methodologies will be provided, but a readiness to learn and adapt to new technologies is crucial.

The role demands a physically fit individual capable of traveling extensively within Goma and surrounding areas, often on foot or by local transport, to reach remote communities. You will be an integral part of a dynamic and supportive team, working under the direct supervision of a Team Leader and in close coordination with the wider MEL team. Your daily contributions will be vital in helping Mercy Corps measure the impact of our programs, identify areas for improvement, and demonstrate accountability to our donors and, most importantly, to the communities we serve. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews in assigned communities.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and completeness using digital data collection tools (e.g., ODK, KoboToolbox).
  • Liaise effectively with community leaders, local authorities, and beneficiaries to facilitate smooth data collection and build trust.
  • Adhere strictly to survey protocols, ethical guidelines, data protection policies, and Mercy Corps' code of conduct.
  • Report daily progress, challenges encountered in the field, and any security incidents to the team leader promptly.
  • Participate actively in daily debriefing sessions, data review processes, and team meetings to enhance data quality.
  • Maintain all data collection equipment (e.g., tablets, smartphones) in good working condition and report any malfunctions.
  • Provide accurate information about Mercy Corps programs to community members when appropriate, without misrepresentation.

Required Skills

  • Fluency in Swahili and French (written and spoken) is mandatory.
  • Proven experience (at least 6 months) with digital data collection tools such as ODK Collect, KoboToolbox, or similar platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills for engaging with diverse community members.
  • Strong attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to data quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently in challenging field environments, often involving long hours and travel on foot.
  • Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in data collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with international NGOs, research institutions, or government agencies in the DRC.
  • Diploma or degree in Social Sciences, Statistics, Demography, Community Development, or a related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of local contexts, cultural norms, and security dynamics in North Kivu Province.
  • Experience in both quantitative and qualitative data collection methodologies.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian principles and accountability frameworks.
