Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Compliance Officer to join our dynamic team in Calabar. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring Union Bank’s adherence to all relevant local and international laws, regulations, and internal policies. This position demands a meticulous individual with a deep understanding of the Nigerian financial regulatory landscape, including Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) guidelines, Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT) frameworks, and Know Your Customer (KYC) principles. You will be instrumental in identifying, assessing, monitoring, and reporting on compliance risks, thereby safeguarding the bank’s reputation and operational integrity. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive compliance programs and policies in line with regulatory requirements.
- Monitor regulatory developments and industry best practices to ensure timely adaptation of internal controls and procedures.
- Conduct regular compliance risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.
- Perform periodic reviews of bank operations to ensure adherence to AML/CFT, KYC, and other regulatory guidelines.
- Provide guidance and training to staff on compliance matters, fostering a strong compliance culture across the organization.
- Investigate and report on suspected compliance breaches, incidents, and suspicious activities.
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely regulatory reports to relevant authorities (e.g., CBN, NDIC, NFIU).
- Serve as the primary contact for regulatory inquiries and examinations.
- Advise senior management on compliance risks and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Collaborate with internal audit, legal, and risk management departments to ensure integrated risk management.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Compliance Officer, preferably within the banking sector.
- In-depth knowledge of Nigerian banking laws and regulations (CBN Act, BOFIA, AML/CFT Act).
- Strong understanding of financial crime prevention, including AML, CFT, and sanctions compliance.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into practical policies and procedures.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with compliance software/tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Law, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CCO, ACAMS, ICA Compliance Diploma).
- Master's degree in a related discipline.
- Experience with regulatory reporting platforms and compliance management systems.
