Key Responsibilities
- Provide engaging and empathetic companionship, encouraging social interaction and mental stimulation.
- Assist clients with light household duties, including tidying living spaces, kitchen, and laundry.
- Prepare nutritious meals and snacks, adhering to dietary preferences and restrictions, and assisting with feeding if needed.
- Accompany clients on errands, grocery shopping, medical appointments, and social outings.
- Engage clients in recreational and leisure activities such as reading, board games, hobbies, or light walks.
- Monitor and report any notable changes in a client's physical condition, cognitive function, or emotional state to the supervisor.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable living environment for clients.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided and client observations.
- Adhere strictly to all VHA Home HealthCare policies, procedures, and client confidentiality guidelines.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in a caregiving, home support, or companionship role (can be paid or volunteer).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to assist others.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and maintain professional boundaries.
- Reliable, punctual, and highly organized.
- Capable of performing light physical tasks, including walking, standing, and light lifting (up to 20 lbs).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, or willingness to obtain.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) program, Home Support Worker certificate, or equivalent healthcare-related education.
- Experience working with individuals living with dementia, cognitive impairments, or other chronic conditions.
- Valid G Class Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle for client transportation.
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to Toronto's diverse population.
