Job Description

This pivotal role is central to our community-based health initiatives in Bodejo, Abuja. As a Community Health Worker (CHW), you will be the direct link between ActionAid Nigeria’s health programs and the local community. Your work will involve extensive outreach, health education, and support services to improve health outcomes and promote well-being among residents. You will conduct home visits, organize community health campaigns, provide basic health screenings, and facilitate access to essential healthcare services. This position requires a compassionate individual with strong communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a deep commitment to serving vulnerable populations. You will play a crucial role in building trust, disseminating vital health information, and empowering community members to take proactive steps towards better health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular household visits and community outreach activities to identify health needs.
  • Provide culturally sensitive health education on topics such as maternal and child health, nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention (e.g., malaria, HIV/AIDS).
  • Organize and facilitate community health awareness campaigns and workshops.
  • Conduct basic health screenings (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, weight) and refer individuals to health facilities for further care when necessary.
  • Assist community members in navigating the healthcare system and accessing available services.
  • Distribute health materials, such as leaflets, brochures, and condoms, as part of awareness programs.
  • Collect and maintain accurate data on community health activities, demographics, and outcomes.
  • Report on community health trends and challenges to program coordinators.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, local health authorities, and residents.
  • Support the implementation of specific health projects and interventions as directed.
  • Act as a liaison between the community and ActionAid Nigeria, ensuring effective two-way communication.
  • Identify and report on local traditional health practices that may impact community health.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse community members.
  • Strong understanding of basic health principles and community health practices.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English and local languages relevant to Abuja (e.g., Hausa, Gbagyi).
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy, with a non-judgmental approach to individuals and communities.
  • Basic data collection and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging community settings.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to respond to community needs effectively.
  • Proficiency in using basic mobile phone applications for data collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a Community Health Worker or similar outreach role in a rural or peri-urban setting.
  • Certification or training in Community Health, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of local health issues and existing healthcare infrastructure in Abuja.
  • Experience working with NGOs or international development organizations.
  • First aid certification.
