Job Description

Radio Okapi is seeking a talented and passionate Cinematographer to join our dynamic team in Bunia, Ituri Province, for an upcoming short film production. This is a unique opportunity to contribute your visual storytelling expertise to compelling narratives that promote peace, development, and human rights within the Congolese context. As a Cinematographer, you will be responsible for bringing our creative visions to life, crafting visually stunning and impactful footage for a short film designed to raise awareness and foster dialogue on critical issues affecting the region. You will work closely with directors, producers, and the wider production team from concept to final cut, ensuring the highest quality of visual storytelling. This role demands not only technical mastery of camera and lighting equipment but also a keen eye for aesthetics, a strong understanding of narrative, and the ability to work effectively in diverse and sometimes challenging field environments. Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with directors and producers to understand the artistic vision and translate it into compelling visual sequences.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of professional camera equipment, including DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and cinema cameras.
  • Design and execute lighting setups for various shooting conditions, both on location and in studio environments.
  • Scout locations for visual potential, technical feasibility, and logistical requirements.
  • Ensure proper framing, composition, and camera movement to enhance storytelling and emotional impact.
  • Manage and organize footage, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and transfer to post-production.
  • Adhere to production schedules and deadlines, managing time effectively during shoots.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with camera and lighting gear in the field.
  • Mentor junior crew members and contribute to a positive and collaborative production environment.
  • Ensure all visual content aligns with Radio Okapi’s editorial guidelines and ethical standards.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a Cinematographer or Director of Photography.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting a wide range of professional cinema and broadcast cameras (e.g., Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, RED).
  • Expert knowledge of lighting techniques and equipment for various shooting conditions.
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling principles, composition, color theory, and camera movement.
  • Demonstrable experience with field production, including working in remote or challenging environments.
  • Familiarity with post-production workflows, including data wrangling and basic color grading concepts.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili; knowledge of French is a significant advantage.
  • Portfolio or showreel demonstrating a strong body of work in short films, documentaries, or similar visual content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Film Production, Cinematography, Media Arts, or a related field.
  • Experience working with NGOs, international organizations, or media outlets in a development/humanitarian context.
  • Proficiency in drone operation and aerial cinematography.
  • Experience with motion graphics and visual effects.
  • A strong understanding of the socio-political context of the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially Ituri Province.
