Job Description

Duddingston Primary School is seeking a dedicated and proactive Caretaker to join our close-knit team. This pivotal full-time role is essential in ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of our school premises and grounds. As our Caretaker, you will be the cornerstone of our operational upkeep, playing a vital role in creating an optimal learning and working environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. You will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, security, and cleanliness of the school buildings and surrounding outdoor areas. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs across the school premises, including plumbing, joinery, and electrical work (where qualified and safe to do so).
  • Ensure the security of the school buildings and grounds, including locking/unlocking, alarm setting, and monitoring access.
  • Oversee and undertake cleaning duties, ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the school.
  • Manage grounds maintenance, including litter picking, basic gardening, and ensuring pathways are clear and safe.
  • Conduct regular health and safety checks, identify hazards, and report or rectify issues promptly.
  • Manage school deliveries, move furniture, and set up rooms for events as required.
  • Monitor utility systems (heating, lighting, water) and report any faults.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, inspections, and supplies.
  • Act as a key holder and respond to out-of-hours emergencies if necessary.
  • Liaise with external contractors for specialist repairs and maintenance, overseeing their work on site.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a caretaker, facilities management, or property maintenance role, preferably within a school or similar institutional setting.
  • Strong practical skills in general maintenance, including basic plumbing, joinery, and decorating.
  • Good understanding of health and safety regulations and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritise tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, pupils, and visitors.
  • A reliable and responsible approach with a strong work ethic.
  • Basic IT literacy for record keeping and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant trade qualification or certification (e.g., in joinery, plumbing, electrical).
  • First Aid at Work certification.
  • Experience with building management systems.
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations.
  • Clean driving licence.
