This role involves a variety of tasks that keep our café running smoothly. You’ll assist with basic food preparation, such as washing and cutting vegetables, assembling ingredients, and preparing simple dishes under supervision. You’ll also be responsible for serving meals with a smile, ensuring portions are correct, and interacting positively with our diverse clientele. Maintaining cleanliness and organization in the kitchen and dining areas is paramount; this includes washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, sweeping, and mopping. Stocking supplies, accepting deliveries, and helping to manage inventory will also be part of your routine. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with basic food preparation, including washing, chopping, and assembling ingredients.
  • Serve meals to community members with a friendly and welcoming demeanor, ensuring correct portion sizes.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in the kitchen, dining, and storage areas at all times.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment efficiently using manual and mechanical methods.
  • Restock food items, beverages, and supplies in the cafeteria and serving lines as needed.
  • Receive and store deliveries in an organized and sanitary manner, following FIFO principles.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely (e.g., dishwashers, warmers, microwaves) after proper training.
  • Adhere strictly to all food safety and hygiene regulations, including obtaining and maintaining FoodSafe certification.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down dining areas for daily meals and special community events.
  • Interact positively and respectfully with staff, volunteers, and diverse community members.
  • Support the Head Cook or Kitchen Supervisor with various tasks as required to ensure smooth operations.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to interact with colleagues and community members.
  • Reliability and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and efficiently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FoodSafe Level 1 certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire and within a specified timeframe).
