Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of various food items, including washing, peeling, chopping vegetables, and portioning ingredients under the guidance of cooks and supervisors.
  • Support the kitchen team in preparing salads, sandwiches, fruits, and other cold food items.
  • Ensure all food preparation areas and equipment are cleaned and sanitized regularly throughout the shift, adhering to strict health and safety standards.
  • Operate and clean kitchen equipment such as mixers, slicers, and dishwashers safely and efficiently.
  • Wash and properly store dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchenware.
  • Assist with receiving, rotating, and storing food supplies and ingredients, ensuring proper stock rotation (FIFO – First In, First Out).
  • Monitor food temperatures and ensure compliance with food safety regulations and critical control points.
  • Help set up and replenish serving lines and self-service stations during meal periods.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including floors, counters, and storage areas.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth operations.
  • Adhere to all university policies and procedures, including those related to health, safety, and hygiene.
  • Assist with any other duties as assigned to support the overall efficiency of the food service operation.

Required Skills

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Basic understanding of kitchen safety and hygiene practices.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a food service environment (e.g., restaurant, cafeteria, catering) is an asset but not required.
  • Food Safe Level 1 certification or willingness to obtain it within the first three months of employment.
