Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Cable Splicer to join our technical team in Calabar. This is a critical outdoor role that involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical cables and associated equipment within our distribution network. As a Cable Splicer, you will be instrumental in ensuring the continuity and reliability of power supply to homes and businesses across Efut Esighi and surrounding areas. Your daily tasks will include performing intricate splicing work on both underground and overhead power lines, identifying and resolving cable faults, and conducting routine inspections to prevent outages. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience in high-voltage and low-voltage cable systems, a strong understanding of electrical safety protocols, and the physical stamina required for demanding outdoor work in various weather conditions. You will be a vital part of our field operations, working independently and as part of a team to respond to emergencies, complete scheduled maintenance, and contribute to new installations. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency. Key Responsibilities
- Perform splicing, terminating, and testing of electrical cables (both underground and overhead) for low and high voltage systems.
- Install, repair, and maintain various types of cables, conduits, and related electrical infrastructure.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot cable faults, identify root causes, and implement effective repair solutions.
- Operate and maintain specialized cable splicing and testing equipment.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards.
- Conduct routine inspections of cable networks to identify potential issues and perform preventive maintenance.
- Respond promptly to emergency call-outs for cable repairs and outages.
- Accurately complete work orders, service reports, and other necessary documentation.
- Collaborate effectively with other technical teams, engineers, and field personnel.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of materials, including hazardous waste.
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs to stay updated with new technologies and techniques.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in electrical cable splicing and termination.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety practices and procedures.
- Proficiency in using cable splicing tools and testing equipment (e.g., fault locators, megohmmeters).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and circuit diagrams.
- Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and challenging terrains.
- Valid driver’s license (Class C or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Commitment to quality workmanship and operational excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade certificate or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
- Certification in high-voltage cable splicing.
- At least 5 years of experience in electricity distribution or utility sector.
- Familiarity with PHEDC's distribution network and operational procedures.
- Experience with fiber optic cable splicing and testing.
