Job Description
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is seeking dedicated and experienced Bus Drivers for both shuttle and public transport routes based in the Yallahs, St. Thomas Parish area. This pivotal role involves operating our modern fleet of buses to transport passengers safely and efficiently along designated routes, adhering to strict schedules, and maintaining the highest standards of customer service. As a JUTC Bus Driver, you will be the face of our company, responsible for ensuring a positive and secure travel experience for all commuters.
Your daily duties will include conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, ensuring all safety features are operational, and reporting any defects promptly. You will be responsible for collecting fares, issuing tickets, and managing passenger boarding and alighting processes smoothly. Excellent navigational skills and a thorough understanding of traffic laws and company policies are paramount. You must be able to adapt to varying traffic conditions, weather challenges, and manage diverse passenger needs with professionalism and courtesy.

Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a public transit bus on assigned routes and schedules, adhering to all traffic laws and company policies.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including checking fuel, oil, tires, brakes, and safety equipment, and promptly report any mechanical issues or defects.
- Collect fares, issue tickets, and provide correct change to passengers in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Assist passengers, including those with disabilities, with boarding and alighting, ensuring their comfort and safety.
- Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior throughout shifts.
- Communicate effectively with passengers, dispatch, and other JUTC personnel regarding schedule adherence, delays, or incidents.
- Respond calmly and professionally to emergencies, passenger inquiries, and difficult situations.
- Complete necessary paperwork, including trip logs, incident reports, and fare collection records, accurately and legibly.
- Adhere strictly to designated routes and timetables to ensure punctuality and reliable service.
- Operate all onboard equipment, including two-way radios, fare boxes, and accessibility ramps.
Required Skills
- Valid Jamaican General Driver's License (Minimum Class C or F with 'P' endorsement for public passenger vehicles)
- Clean driving record with no major violations for the past 5 years
- Proven experience in operating heavy vehicles, preferably buses or commercial vehicles
- Excellent knowledge of road safety regulations and traffic laws in Jamaica
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment
- Patience, attentiveness, and a calm demeanor under pressure
- Ability to read and understand maps and navigate complex routes
- Physical ability to sit for long periods, operate controls, and perform minor vehicle checks
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of professional bus driving experience, specifically in public transport or shuttle services
- Defensive Driving certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Familiarity with the Yallahs, Morant Bay, and broader St. Thomas Parish road network
- Experience with electronic fare collection systems
