Job Description
Ashtrom Building Systems is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Bricklayer (Mason) to join our dynamic construction team in New Kingston, Kingston. This is a pivotal role for an individual passionate about precision craftsmanship, structural integrity, and contributing to the creation of iconic buildings across Jamaica. As a Bricklayer with Ashtrom, you will be instrumental in the precise laying of bricks, concrete blocks, stone, and other masonry materials to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, fireplaces, and other structural and aesthetic components. Your expertise will directly impact the architectural appeal, durability, and safety of our diverse portfolio of projects, ranging from large-scale commercial complexes to critical public infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout, dimensions, and materials required for masonry structures.
- Lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone, and other masonry units with precision to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, fireplaces, and other structures.
- Measure distances from reference points and mark guidelines to lay out work accurately, ensuring structures are plumb, level, and square.
- Prepare and mix mortar, grout, and concrete to specified consistencies, using hand tools or mixing machines, ensuring optimal bond and finish.
- Cut and trim masonry units to size, using hand and power tools such as brick hammers, chisels, power saws, and grinders.
- Apply plaster, stucco, or other coatings to masonry surfaces for protection and aesthetic finish.
- Ensure proper alignment, spacing, and levelness of units using levels, plumb bobs, squares, and measuring tapes.
- Clean and prepare surfaces for masonry work, removing debris, old mortar, and other obstructions.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, adhering strictly to all company and industry safety standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively, conducting routine checks and minor maintenance.
- Collaborate effectively with other construction team members, including carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and general laborers, to ensure project synergy.
- Inspect own work and the work of junior team members for proper quality, structural integrity, and adherence to building codes and specifications.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Bricklayer/Mason in commercial or residential construction projects.
- Excellent knowledge of masonry techniques, tools, and materials, including brick, block, and stone.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings.
- Strong understanding of building codes, quality standards, and safety regulations relevant to masonry.
- Proficiency in mixing and applying mortar, grout, and concrete to specified consistencies.
- Skilled in the safe and effective use of hand and power tools common to masonry work (e.g., trowels, levels, plumb bobs, saws).
- Exceptional attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
- Physical strength, stamina, and manual dexterity required for demanding construction tasks.
- Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills for effective collaboration on site.
Preferred Qualifications
- Vocational training or certification in masonry, building construction, or a related trade.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Experience with various types of masonry, including decorative brickwork and specialized stone applications.
- Knowledge of different types of mortar, their properties, and appropriate applications for various conditions.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Ability to mentor and guide junior masons or apprentices.
