Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bricklayer to join our dynamic construction team for various building projects in the Omagwa, Port Harcourt area. As a Bricklayer at GCL Construction, you will be instrumental in the structural integrity and aesthetic finish of our developments. You will be responsible for laying bricks, blocks, and other building materials to construct or repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches, and other structures in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and building codes. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of different masonry techniques, excellent manual dexterity, a keen eye for detail, and a steadfast commitment to safety and quality. This role requires precision, physical stamina, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a larger construction crew. Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout and dimensions.
  • Measure distance from reference points and mark guidelines to lay out work.
  • Mix mortar, grout, and other binding agents by hand or using a mixer to the correct consistency.
  • Lay bricks, blocks, and other masonry units in mortar to construct or repair walls, foundations, arches, fireplaces, and other structures.
  • Check vertical and horizontal alignment of courses with plumb bob, level, and straightedge to ensure accuracy.
  • Cut and trim bricks and blocks to size using trowel, hammer, chisel, or power saw as required.
  • Repair and maintain existing brickwork, including repointing joints and replacement of damaged units.
  • Ensure all work adheres strictly to safety regulations, relevant building codes, and project specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring proper storage of tools and materials.
  • Collaborate effectively with other construction workers, supervisors, and site management to ensure project timelines are met.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Bricklayer in building construction, with a strong portfolio of completed projects.
  • Proficiency in laying various types of bricks, concrete blocks, and natural stones.
  • Strong understanding of masonry techniques, materials, and their application.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret complex construction blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, precision, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Physical stamina and strength to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting heavy materials and working in various weather conditions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction site safety regulations and best practices.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a valued member of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade test certificate or relevant vocational qualification in masonry/bricklaying from a recognized institution.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various masonry tools and equipment (e.g., brick saws, mortar mixers, power trowels).
  • Familiarity with local building codes, standards, and material specifications in Nigeria.
  • Valid First Aid certification.
  • Prior experience working on large-scale commercial, industrial, or residential projects with tight deadlines.
