Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Boat Captain to join our dynamic team, focusing on ferry and water transport operations within the Saint Catherine region and surrounding coastal areas. As a Boat Captain with the Port Authority of Jamaica, you will be entrusted with the critical responsibility of commanding and navigating various vessels, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely transport of passengers and/or cargo. This role demands exceptional leadership, a deep understanding of maritime regulations, and an unwavering commitment to safety protocols. You will be responsible for the vessel’s operational readiness, maintenance oversight, crew management, and strict adherence to all national and international maritime laws. Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate vessels safely and efficiently through designated routes, adhering to schedules for ferry and water transport services.
- Ensure strict compliance with all national and international maritime laws, regulations, and company policies, including SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISM Code where applicable.
- Oversee the overall operational readiness of the vessel, including regular inspections of machinery, safety equipment, navigation systems, and structural integrity.
- Manage and lead the vessel's crew, fostering a culture of safety, discipline, and teamwork; conducting regular safety drills and training.
- Monitor weather conditions, sea state, and other environmental factors, making informed decisions to ensure the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers/cargo.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, voyage records, maintenance reports, and other necessary documentation.
- Implement and enforce emergency procedures, responding effectively to incidents such as man overboard, fire, collision, or medical emergencies.
- Liaise with port control, shore operations, and other maritime authorities as required.
Required Skills
- Valid STCW Certificate of Competency as a Master (or equivalent for domestic voyages)
- Extensive experience in commanding various types of vessels, particularly in ferry or passenger/cargo transport.
- Profound knowledge of maritime navigation, seamanship, vessel handling, and marine safety procedures.
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities under pressure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in radar, ECDIS, GPS, and other modern navigation and communication equipment.
- Ability to interpret weather forecasts and marine charts accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Nautical Science, Maritime Operations, or a related field.
- Specific experience operating vessels in Jamaican waters or similar Caribbean environments.
- Advanced first aid and medical care certifications.
- Experience with environmental protection and pollution prevention protocols.
- Knowledge of maritime security regulations (ISPS Code).
