Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, bake, and finish a diverse range of baked goods, including various breads (e.g., sourdough, whole wheat, specialty loaves), rolls, pastries, cakes, cookies, and other confectionery items, ensuring consistent quality and flavor.
  • Accurately measure and mix ingredients, follow established recipes, and adjust formulations as necessary for product consistency and quality control.
  • Monitor oven temperatures, proofing processes, and baking times to achieve optimal product texture, appearance, and taste.
  • Decorate and present baked goods in an attractive and appealing manner for retail display.
  • Manage and organize ingredient inventory, including receiving, storing, and rotating supplies, and assist with placing orders to maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment, adhering strictly to all food safety regulations, HACCP principles, and company policies.
  • Operate, clean, and perform routine maintenance on baking equipment such as mixers, ovens, proofers, and dough dividers.
  • Innovate and develop new recipes or refine existing ones to enhance our product offering and respond to customer preferences.
  • Collaborate effectively with the wider supermarket team, including sales and customer service, to ensure seamless operations and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage production schedules to meet demand and minimize waste.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience as a Baker, Pastry Chef, or in a similar professional baking role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of baking principles, techniques, and ingredients for both bread and pastry production.
  • Strong understanding and strict adherence to food safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards (e.g., HACCP).
  • Ability to work early morning shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required by the business.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, precision, and a creative eye for presentation.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy bags of ingredients (up to 50 lbs), and work in varied temperature environments.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive, collaborative attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Culinary degree or vocational certification in Baking and Pastry Arts from a recognized institution.
  • Experience in a high-volume production bakery or a supermarket/hotel bakery setting.
  • Familiarity with local Jamaican baking traditions and ingredients.
  • Basic computer literacy for inventory tracking and recipe management.
