Job Description
Gécamines is seeking an exceptional and highly motivated AI Specialist with a strong focus on Model Training to join our growing Digital Innovation team in Likasi, Haut-Katanga Province. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in advancing our capabilities in artificial intelligence and machine learning, directly contributing to the optimization of our mining and processing operations. You will design, develop, train, and deploy sophisticated AI models that address complex challenges, from predictive maintenance and geological analysis to supply chain optimization and process control. This position requires a deep understanding of various machine learning algorithms, advanced statistical analysis, and robust programming skills.
You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of AI model training, including comprehensive data preprocessing, intelligent feature engineering, selecting appropriate model architectures, meticulous hyperparameter tuning, rigorous validation, and continuous performance monitoring. Collaboration with data engineers, domain experts, and other AI/ML professionals will be key to translating complex business problems into robust, scalable technical solutions. Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement machine learning models from scratch, focusing on supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning techniques relevant to industrial applications.
- Perform extensive data preprocessing, cleaning, and feature engineering to prepare diverse datasets, often large-scale and complex, for model training.
- Select and optimize appropriate model architectures (e.g., deep neural networks, tree-based models, regression models) based on problem requirements and data characteristics.
- Manage the entire model training pipeline, including hyperparameter tuning, cross-validation, and performance evaluation using relevant industry-specific metrics.
- Collaborate closely with data engineers to ensure data quality, pipeline efficiency, and accessibility for robust model development.
- Work with MLOps engineers to facilitate the seamless deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of AI models in production environments, ensuring their ongoing accuracy and reliability.
- Conduct thorough experimentation, A/B testing, and comparative analysis to identify and implement optimal model improvements.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI/ML research and actively apply cutting-edge techniques to Gécamines' unique industrial challenges.
- Document model development, training procedures, architectural decisions, and performance metrics comprehensively for reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
- Communicate complex technical concepts and model insights effectively to both technical teams and non-technical business stakeholders, fostering data-driven decision-making.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Python and relevant ML libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Pandas, NumPy).
- Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and data structures.
- Demonstrable experience with model training, validation, hyperparameter tuning, and performance evaluation techniques.
- Solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and probability theory.
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple projects.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for ML development and deployment.
- Familiarity with MLOps principles and tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, MLflow, Airflow).
- Proven experience in industrial sectors, particularly mining, heavy machinery, manufacturing, or supply chain optimization.
- Knowledge of big data technologies (e.g., Spark, Hadoop) and distributed computing.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver production-ready, impactful AI models from conception to deployment.
