Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Agronomist with a specialization in soil science to join our research staff in the Shell Industrial Area, Port Harcourt. This is a crucial role for an individual passionate about environmental sustainability, land management, and agricultural research within an industrial context. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting in-depth soil analysis, implementing robust research projects related to soil health, fertility, and remediation, and providing expert recommendations to support our operational and community-focused initiatives. You will work within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team, applying cutting-edge scientific methodologies to address complex environmental challenges, ranging from optimizing land use in industrial zones to contributing to community agricultural development programs. Your work will directly influence our environmental strategies, ensuring compliance with local and international regulations, promoting sustainable practices, and driving innovation in land restoration and agricultural science. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive soil sampling, analysis, and interpretation of results, including physical, chemical, and biological properties, across various sites.
- Design, execute, and manage research projects focused on soil fertility, nutrient cycling, soil degradation, and remediation techniques for impacted lands.
- Develop and implement sustainable soil management practices for various land-use scenarios, including industrial facilities, operational sites, and surrounding community farmlands.
- Provide expert advice and technical support on agronomic issues, land reclamation strategies, and agricultural best practices to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Prepare detailed scientific reports, technical documents, and compelling presentations for internal stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and community partners.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including environmental engineers, community relations specialists, and project managers, to achieve project objectives.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented soil management and remediation strategies, adjusting plans as necessary.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in soil science, agronomy, environmental regulations, and sustainable land practices.
- Ensure all activities strictly adhere to company safety and environmental policies, as well as local and national regulations.
- Contribute to environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and post-impact remediation efforts, providing scientific rigor to these processes.
Required Skills
- Proven expertise in soil science, including soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil microbiology.
- Strong practical experience in various soil sampling techniques and advanced laboratory analysis.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis and data interpretation related to soil and agricultural research.
- Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and manage both field and laboratory research projects independently.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and best practices in land management and remediation.
- Proficiency in relevant software (e.g., GIS, statistical packages like R or SAS).
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within diverse team environments.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
- Professional certification in agronomy, soil science, or environmental management (e.g., PAg, CPSC, REM).
- Prior experience with bioremediation techniques, phytoremediation, and contaminated land assessment.
- In-depth knowledge of local agricultural practices, crops, and ecological challenges specific to the Niger Delta region.
- Demonstrated project management experience, particularly in environmental or agricultural initiatives.
- Fluency in local Nigerian languages (e.g., Ikwerre, Kalabari, Ijaw) is an added advantage.
