Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Accountant to join the Nigerian Ports Authority team in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. This full-time position is crucial for maintaining the financial health and integrity of our operations within the region. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of accounting functions, including financial record-keeping, reconciliation, reporting, and ensuring compliance with established financial policies and regulations. You will work closely with various departments to support budgetary control, assist in audit preparations, and provide accurate financial data for decision-making. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to accuracy and ethical financial practices. Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, examine, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
- Develop, implement, modify, and document recordkeeping and accounting systems, making use of current computer technology.
- Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment, reporting, and other tax requirements.
- Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses.
- Report to management regarding the finances of establishment.
- Establish tables of accounts and assign entries to proper accounts.
- Inspect account books and accounting systems for efficiency and use of accepted accounting procedures.
- Organize and maintain financial records, including journals, ledgers, and other financial documentation.
- Conduct monthly and annual financial close processes.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and explanations.
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian accounting standards (NAS) and other relevant financial regulations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in an accounting role.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Nigerian accounting standards (NAS).
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., SAP, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Membership in a professional accounting body (e.g., ICAN, ACCA, ANAN).
- Experience working within a government agency or public sector organization.
- Master's degree in Finance or Accounting.
- Familiarity with public sector financial management systems.
