Job Description

The University of Calabar is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Academic Counselor to join our Student Affairs team. In this pivotal full-time, on-site role, you will be instrumental in providing comprehensive academic guidance, support, and resources to our diverse student body, primarily focusing on post-secondary university students. You will work closely with students from various academic disciplines, helping them navigate their educational journeys, overcome obstacles, and achieve their full potential. This includes advising on course selection, major exploration, academic planning, developing effective study skills, and exploring career pathways that align with their academic pursuits and personal aspirations. The ideal candidate will be a proactive listener, an excellent communicator, and possess the ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized academic counseling to university students on course selection, major/minor declarations, and academic planning to ensure timely graduation.
- Assist students in developing effective study habits, time management skills, and test-taking strategies.
- Guide students through university policies and procedures related to academics, withdrawals, appeals, and disciplinary actions.
- Identify students at academic risk and connect them with appropriate university resources, such as tutoring services, disability support, and mental health counseling.
- Conduct workshops and presentations on topics like academic success, career exploration, and post-graduate opportunities.
- Collaborate with faculty, department heads, and other student support services to ensure a holistic approach to student development.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress.
- Stay informed about current educational trends, university programs, and labor market demands to provide relevant guidance.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in academic advising or counseling within a higher education setting
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Strong empathy and ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds
- Proficiency in using student information systems and standard office software (MS Office Suite)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, or a related discipline
- Experience with career counseling and development strategies
- Knowledge of academic programs and requirements specific to the Nigerian university system
- Certification or licensure in counseling (e.g., from relevant professional bodies in Nigeria)
