Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agricultural Officer – Crop & Livestock to join our dynamic team in Bandundu, Kwilu Province. This pivotal role involves leading and implementing agricultural development initiatives focused on both crop production and livestock management. The successful candidate will work directly with smallholder farmers and community groups, providing technical expertise, training, and support to improve farming practices, increase yields, enhance animal health, and promote sustainable livelihoods. You will be instrumental in fostering community engagement, facilitating knowledge transfer, and ensuring the effective implementation of project activities in line with Caritas Congo Asbl’s mission and objectives. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to smallholder farmers on improved crop cultivation techniques, including soil management, seed selection, planting, pest and disease control, and post-harvest management.
  • Develop and implement sustainable agricultural practices such as agroforestry, crop rotation, organic farming, and water conservation methods.
  • Offer expert advice and support for livestock management, including animal husbandry, breeding practices, disease prevention, basic veterinary care, and fodder production.
  • Conduct regular field visits to project sites to monitor progress, identify challenges, and provide timely solutions and follow-up support to farmers.
  • Facilitate the formation and strengthening of farmer cooperatives and producer groups, promoting collective action and market access.
  • Organize and lead participatory workshops and demonstrations on new agricultural technologies and best practices.
  • Collect and analyze agricultural data, including crop yields, livestock health indicators, and farmer adoption rates, to inform project reporting and decision-making.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, activity plans, and progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Caritas Congo Asbl's operational guidelines, policies, and ethical standards in all project activities.
  • Liaise effectively with local government authorities, agricultural extension services, NGOs, and community leaders to foster partnerships and ensure program sustainability.
  • Promote gender equality and inclusion in all agricultural activities, ensuring equitable participation and benefits for men and women.
  • Support the distribution of agricultural inputs (seeds, tools, fertilizers) and livestock supplies as per project plans.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, Animal Production, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in agricultural extension services, crop production, and livestock management, preferably in rural DRC.
  • Profound knowledge of farming systems, crop cycles, and common livestock diseases prevalent in the region.
  • Strong practical skills in farmer training, community mobilization, and participatory approaches.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills in French and at least one local language (e.g., Lingala or Kikongo).
  • Ability to work independently in remote areas and as part of a multicultural team.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office Suite).
  • Valid motorcycle driving license is a significant advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant agricultural discipline.
  • Experience working with international NGOs or faith-based organizations.
  • Familiarity with project cycle management and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) tools.
  • Proven experience in developing sustainable livelihood strategies for vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of local socio-cultural contexts in Kwilu Province.
