Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Lab Technician to join our dynamic team within the Medical Laboratory Department at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. This vital role is crucial to the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of our patients, supporting clinicians across various specialties. As a Lab Technician, you will be responsible for performing a wide array of laboratory tests, from routine to complex analyses, on biological samples such as blood, urine, and tissue. Your work will involve operating and maintaining sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring strict adherence to established protocols, and upholding the highest standards of quality control and patient safety. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to precision, as the results you generate directly impact patient care decisions. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of medical laboratory science, excellent technical proficiency, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team. Key Responsibilities
- Collect, process, and analyze patient samples (blood, urine, CSF, tissue, etc.) accurately and efficiently.
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests in areas such as Hematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, and Parasitology.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functionality and troubleshooting minor issues.
- Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety regulations, quality control measures, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Record and report test results accurately and in a timely manner, maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs to ensure reliable test results.
- Prepare reagents, media, and stains according to laboratory protocols.
- Assist in the training and supervision of junior staff and student interns.
- Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering and stocking supplies.
- Collaborate effectively with medical doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory services and practices.
Required Skills
- Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) certification or equivalent professional qualification.
- Proficiency in performing various laboratory techniques and tests.
- Strong understanding of laboratory safety and quality control principles.
- Competency in operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Lab Technician in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Familiarity with national and international laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., ISO 15189).
