Job Description

Are you a night owl with a passion for hospitality and a keen eye for detail? The Victoria Inn, Peckham Rye, is seeking a dedicated and vigilant Night Porter to join our esteemed team. This pivotal full-time role is essential to ensuring the safety, security, and comfort of our guests and premises during the overnight hours. As our Night Porter, you will be the face of The Victoria Inn from dusk till dawn, providing a seamless and reassuring presence for our overnight guests, ensuring their stay is peaceful and undisturbed.

Your responsibilities will extend beyond typical front desk duties; you will be instrumental in managing late arrivals and early departures, handling guest inquiries with poise and efficiency, and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and presentation in our public areas. Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the security and safety of the hotel premises and guests during night hours, including regular patrols, CCTV monitoring, and responding to alarms.
  • Manage guest check-ins and check-outs, especially late arrivals and early departures, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to all guest requests, inquiries, and complaints, providing assistance with luggage, room issues, or local information.
  • Handle any emergencies, such as fire alarms, medical incidents, or security breaches, following established hotel procedures and contacting relevant authorities.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the lobby, reception, lounge, and other public areas through regular tidying and light cleaning duties.
  • Prepare and set up breakfast areas or public spaces for the following day's operations, ensuring all amenities are stocked and organised.
  • Process night audits, complete daily reports, and reconcile financial transactions accurately.
  • Ensure all external doors and windows are securely locked and unlocked at appropriate times, following hotel security protocols.
  • Assist with bar closure and re-stocking, or other ad-hoc tasks as required by the management team.
  • Provide a welcoming, discreet, and friendly presence, acting as the primary point of contact for guests overnight.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with a polite and professional demeanour.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment in unsupervised settings.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a calm, composed approach to unexpected situations or emergencies.
  • Basic computer proficiency for reservations systems, reporting, and email correspondence.
  • A high level of reliability, punctuality, and a strong, dedicated work ethic.
  • Physical stamina to perform regular patrols, stand for extended periods, and handle light manual tasks (e.g., luggage assistance).
  • Legally eligible to work in the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (at least 6 months) in a hotel night porter, front desk, or similar overnight hospitality role.
  • First Aid and/or fire marshal training certification.
  • Knowledge of local area attractions, transportation links, and general information about Peckham and wider London.
  • Experience with property management systems (PMS) such as Opera, Guestline, or similar.
  • A basic understanding of health and safety regulations in a hospitality environment.
