Job Description
As an Environmental Specialist at Chevron, you will play a critical role in upholding our commitment to environmental excellence and sustainability across our Nigerian operations, particularly supporting activities around the Uyo region and broader Akwa Ibom state. This position is vital for ensuring compliance with both national and international environmental regulations, as well as Chevron’s stringent internal policies and standards. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive environmental management programs designed to minimize our ecological footprint, prevent pollution, and promote responsible resource management throughout our project lifecycles. Your day-to-day will involve conducting thorough environmental impact assessments (EIAs), performing detailed site inspections, preparing comprehensive reports, and providing expert guidance on environmental best practices to various project teams, operational units, and contractors. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor robust environmental management systems (EMS) and programs in accordance with local regulations (e.g., NESREA, DPR) and Chevron's global operational standards.
- Conduct comprehensive environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and support the preparation of all necessary environmental permits, licenses, and authorizations for new projects and ongoing operations.
- Ensure strict compliance with all applicable environmental laws, regulations, and Chevron corporate policies and procedures, including international standards like ISO 14001.
- Perform regular environmental audits, inspections, and detailed risk assessments, proactively identifying potential environmental hazards and recommending effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Investigate environmental incidents thoroughly, analyze root causes, and develop robust preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
- Provide expert environmental advice, guidance, and technical support to project teams, contractors, and operational staff on environmental best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive environmental performance reports, including monitoring data and compliance metrics, to internal stakeholders and relevant regulatory bodies.
- Develop and deliver impactful environmental training programs to raise awareness and ensure compliance among employees and contractors.
- Participate actively in community engagement activities related to environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives.
- Stay abreast of emerging environmental regulations, technologies, and best practices within the energy sector to ensure continuous improvement.
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of Nigerian environmental regulations (e.g., NESREA Act, DPR Environmental Guidelines & Standards).
- Proven proficiency in conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Audits.
- Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex environmental data and scientific principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, capable of developing practical solutions to environmental challenges.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Professional certification in environmental management (e.g., NEBOSH Environmental, IEMA, or similar recognized bodies).
- Experience with environmental management software and data analysis tools.
- Previous experience working with international oil and gas companies (IOCs) in Nigeria or similar regions.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standards and implementation.
