Job Description
Join Swissport, the world’s leading provider of airport ground services, in a pivotal role as Ground Handling Staff. Based out of Kingston, Jamaica, though working primarily at Norman Manley International Airport (KIN), you will be an essential part of our operational team, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely turnaround of aircraft. This role is perfect for individuals who are physically fit, possess a strong work ethic, excel in a team environment, and are committed to maintaining the highest safety standards in a fast-paced airport setting. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute directly to airline punctuality and passenger satisfaction. This is a dynamic, hands-on role requiring attention to detail and a proactive approach. You will be trained on various ground support equipment and procedures, becoming an an integral part of the global aviation supply chain. Your efforts directly contribute to the smooth flow of passengers and cargo, making a tangible impact on international logistics.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely load and unload baggage, cargo, and mail from aircraft, ensuring proper weight distribution and security protocols are followed.
- Operate various ground support equipment (GSE) such as push-back tractors, baggage tugs, belt loaders, and forklifts (with proper training and certification).
- Guide aircraft to and from parking stands using visual hand signals (marshalling) and operate communication equipment to coordinate with flight crews and air traffic control.
- Perform general ramp duties, including chocking aircraft wheels, connecting/disconnecting ground power units, and providing portable water and lavatory services.
- Conduct thorough safety checks on all equipment prior to use and report any malfunctions or damage promptly to supervisors.
- Adhere strictly to all company, airline, airport, and regulatory safety and security procedures and guidelines at all times.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment on the ramp and in baggage/cargo handling areas to ensure operational efficiency.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with flight crews, airline representatives, and other ground operations personnel.
- Assist passengers with special needs when required, maintaining a courteous, respectful, and professional demeanor.
- Participate actively in ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills, knowledge, and compliance with evolving industry standards.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent (CXC/CSEC passes preferred).
- Minimum 6 months of experience in a physically demanding role, logistics, warehousing, or similar operational environment.
- Ability to lift heavy items repeatedly (up to 50 lbs / 23 kg) and perform physical tasks in various weather conditions.
- Valid Jamaican General Driver's License (Class B or C) and a clean driving record.
- Excellent teamwork and verbal communication skills.
- Strong commitment to safety, security, and operational compliance.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, early mornings, weekends, and public holidays, based on flight schedules.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain airport security clearance (ACI) and other necessary certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in an airport environment or with ground support equipment operation.
- Experience operating heavy machinery or specialized vehicles.
- Knowledge of aviation safety and security regulations (e.g., ICAO, IATA).
- Forklift operator certification or similar equipment operation licenses.
