Job Description

We are seeking a highly responsible, experienced, and dedicated Driver to join our dynamic team in Goma, North Kivu Province. This critical role involves providing safe, reliable, and efficient personal and corporate transport services for IRC staff, visitors, and official goods. The successful candidate will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth daily operations of our humanitarian activities by facilitating secure movement across Goma and, occasionally, to surrounding areas as required. You will be responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of assigned vehicles, ensuring they are always in optimal working condition and compliant with all safety regulations. This position demands exceptional driving skills, a thorough understanding of local road networks and security protocols, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and discretion. The role requires meticulous attention to detail in record-keeping for vehicle logs, fuel consumption, and maintenance schedules. Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently transport IRC staff, visitors, and official goods to designated locations in Goma and surrounding areas.
  • Adhere strictly to all IRC safety and security policies, local traffic laws, and organizational procedures.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the assigned vehicle, ensuring it is roadworthy and well-maintained.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logbooks, fuel consumption records, and maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure vehicle is kept clean, tidy, and fully equipped with necessary safety tools, first-aid kit, and communication devices.
  • Report any vehicle faults, accidents, or incidents immediately to the supervisor and complete required documentation.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of goods, ensuring secure transit and delivery.
  • Maintain a high level of discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality regarding passengers and assignments.
  • Provide basic vehicle maintenance, including tire changes, fluid checks, and minor repairs as needed.
  • Monitor vehicle registration, insurance, and service expiry dates, informing the supervisor in advance.
  • Act as a responsible ambassador for IRC, projecting a professional image at all times.

Required Skills

  • Valid professional driving license appropriate for the DRC (Category B, C or higher)
  • Minimum 3 years of professional driving experience, preferably with an international NGO or similar organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Goma and North Kivu road networks, traffic laws, and local security conditions.
  • Proven ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent defensive driving skills and a strong safety-first mindset.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in French and/or Swahili.
  • High level of integrity, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as operational needs dictate.
  • Physical fitness to assist with loading/unloading and vehicle maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification in defensive driving or advanced driving techniques.
  • Basic first aid training certificate.
  • Previous experience working in humanitarian or conflict-affected environments.
  • Familiarity with various vehicle types, including 4x4s.
