Job Description

We are actively seeking a meticulous and dedicated Laboratory Analyst to join our quality assurance team at Dangote Sugar Refinery in Calabar. This is a critical on-site role that ensures the highest standards of product quality and safety are maintained throughout our sugar refining process. As a Laboratory Analyst, you will be instrumental in performing rigorous chemical and physical analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products. Your expertise will directly contribute to identifying and mitigating potential quality issues, ensuring our products consistently meet both internal specifications and international food safety standards (such as ISO and HACCP). This position demands a keen eye for detail, strong analytical capabilities, and a commitment to precision and accuracy in all laboratory procedures. You will be responsible for operating and maintaining advanced laboratory equipment, interpreting analytical data, and providing timely reports that inform production decisions. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine chemical and physical analysis of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished sugar products.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as spectrophotometers, pH meters, moisture analyzers, and refractometers.
  • Prepare reagents and solutions according to established laboratory procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Record, interpret, and report analytical results accurately and promptly, maintaining comprehensive laboratory documentation.
  • Monitor critical control points (CCPs) and ensure adherence to HACCP and ISO 22000 food safety management systems.
  • Investigate out-of-specification results, identify root causes, and propose corrective actions in collaboration with the production team.
  • Participate in internal and external audits to ensure compliance with quality management systems.
  • Adhere strictly to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies.
  • Assist in the development and validation of new analytical methods as required.
  • Provide technical support and training to junior staff or production personnel on quality parameters.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a laboratory setting, preferably within the food or beverage industry.
  • Strong understanding of chemical analysis techniques and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (QMS) such as ISO 9001 and food safety standards (HACCP, ISO 22000).
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting using Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong observational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Industrial Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food Science & Technology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Professional certification in Quality Assurance or Food Safety (e.g., HACCP, ISO Lead Auditor).
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software.
  • Knowledge of sugar refining processes and quality parameters specific to sugar production.
