Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Librarian with a strong focus on books and cataloging to join our team, serving the Anchovy and wider Port Antonio community. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in organizing, maintaining, and expanding our rich collection of print and digital resources. Your primary responsibilities will revolve around the technical services of the library, ensuring that all materials are accurately cataloged, classified, and readily accessible to our patrons. This involves working with various cataloging standards and library management systems to create precise bibliographic records. Beyond technical tasks, you will also engage with the public, assisting patrons in locating resources, recommending literature, and fostering an inviting environment for reading and research. Key Responsibilities
- Perform original and copy cataloging of all library materials (books, periodicals, multimedia, digital resources) according to international standards (e.g., RDA, MARC21) and local policies.
- Classify materials using established classification schemes (e.g., Dewey Decimal Classification) to ensure accurate shelving and retrieval.
- Manage and maintain the library's integrated library system (ILS) database, ensuring data integrity and consistency of bibliographic records.
- Assist in the selection and acquisition of new library materials, aligning with collection development policies and community needs.
- Conduct regular inventory and weeding of the collection to maintain its relevance, currency, and physical condition.
- Provide reference and reader's advisory services to patrons, assisting them in locating information and recommending books.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of library programs and events that promote literacy and engage the community.
- Oversee the circulation desk operations, including checking materials in/out, managing patron accounts, and resolving inquiries.
- Participate in library outreach activities to promote services to the wider Anchovy and Port Antonio community.
- Mentor junior staff and volunteers on cataloging procedures and best practices.
- Prepare reports on collection usage, cataloging statistics, and other relevant metrics.
Required Skills
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in library cataloging and technical services.
- Proficiency in cataloging standards and tools (RDA, MARC21, AACR2).
- Experience with Integrated Library Systems (ILS) such as KOHA, Destiny, or similar.
- Strong knowledge of classification schemes (e.g., Dewey Decimal Classification).
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-service orientation.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

- Experience in collection development and material selection.
- Familiarity with digital preservation principles and practices.
- Experience working in a public library setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.
