As our Guidance Counselor, you will work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators to identify student needs, develop individualized support plans, and implement school-wide programs that promote positive mental health, resilience, and academic success. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students on academic, social, emotional, and career concerns.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive guidance programs aligned with the school's mission and educational standards.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external agencies to support student welfare and address specific needs.
  • Conduct crisis intervention and provide immediate support for students experiencing emotional distress or trauma.
  • Assist students with career exploration, university applications, scholarship opportunities, and post-secondary planning.
  • Facilitate workshops and presentations on topics such as conflict resolution, bullying prevention, stress management, and healthy relationships.
  • Maintain confidential student records and ensure compliance with professional ethical standards and legal requirements.
  • Participate in school-wide initiatives, parent-teacher conferences, and staff meetings to contribute to a holistic educational approach.
  • Monitor student progress, identify at-risk students, and develop strategies for academic and personal improvement.
  • Act as an advocate for students, ensuring their rights and needs are met within the school and community.

Required Skills

  • Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling, Educational Psychology, or a related field.
  • Valid professional certification/license as a Guidance Counselor in Jamaica (or eligibility).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Guidance Counselor, preferably in a secondary school setting.
  • Profound understanding of adolescent development, mental health issues, and counseling theories.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to build rapport quickly with students, parents, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong crisis intervention and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging educational workshops.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with restorative justice practices and conflict mediation.
  • Familiarity with local educational policies and student support services in Jamaica.
  • Additional training in specialized areas such as trauma-informed care or substance abuse counseling.
  • Proficiency in using student information systems or counseling management software.
