Job Description

The Ministry of Health & Wellness is seeking a dedicated and proactive Public Health Officer, with a specialized focus on Inspection and Education, to join our team in Whitehouse, Westmoreland. This pivotal role involves actively protecting and improving the health of the community through rigorous health inspections, impactful health education programs, and direct engagement with residents and local businesses. The successful candidate will be instrumental in enforcing public health regulations, conducting comprehensive sanitation and food safety inspections, and developing and delivering educational initiatives aimed at fostering healthier behaviors and environments. You will be a frontline advocate for public health, identifying potential health hazards, investigating outbreaks, and collaborating with various stakeholders to implement effective preventive strategies. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of food establishments, public facilities, and residential areas to ensure compliance with national public health regulations and standards.
  • Investigate public health complaints, environmental hazards, and suspected disease outbreaks, implementing appropriate control measures.
  • Develop, organize, and deliver health education programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns on topics such as hygiene, sanitation, disease prevention, nutrition, and environmental health.
  • Advise community members, businesses, and local authorities on best practices for maintaining public health and preventing the spread of diseases.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data related to public health inspections, educational activities, and community health indicators.
  • Collaborate with other government agencies, community groups, and healthcare providers to implement integrated public health initiatives.
  • Prepare detailed reports, enforcement notices, and recommendations based on inspection findings and investigations.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities related to public health crises.
  • Stay updated on current public health research, regulations, and best practices.
  • Promote healthy lifestyles and advocate for policies that support a healthier community.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Health Sciences, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public health principles, regulations, and practices in Jamaica.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify health risks and develop effective interventions.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for field work.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Public Health or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of proven experience in public health inspection or community health education.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders in Jamaica.
  • Certification in specific public health areas (e.g., food safety, environmental health).
  • Familiarity with local community structures and public health challenges in Westmoreland.
