Job Description
Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital is a cornerstone of healthcare in Westmoreland Parish, dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate medical services to the community. We are currently seeking a highly skilled and empathetic Psychologist to join our dynamic Mental Health Unit. This vital role involves delivering a broad range of psychological services, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling, to patients across various age groups with diverse mental health needs. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, contributing significantly to patient care plans and promoting mental wellness throughout the hospital and community.
As a Psychologist, you will be instrumental in conducting thorough psychological evaluations, developing individualized treatment plans, and implementing evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Your expertise will be crucial in addressing conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, substance use disorders, and other psychological challenges. You will provide individual, group, and family counseling, fostering a supportive and confidential environment where patients can explore their feelings, develop coping mechanisms, and work towards improved mental health outcomes. This role also involves crisis intervention, psychoeducation for patients and their families, and contributing to community outreach programs aimed at destigmatizing mental illness and promoting early intervention.

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and risk assessments for diverse patient populations.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to patient needs.
- Provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy and counseling using various therapeutic modalities (e.g., CBT, DBT, psychodynamic therapy).
- Offer crisis intervention and psychological support to patients experiencing acute mental health distress.
- Collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals within a multidisciplinary team.
- Deliver psychoeducation to patients and their families regarding mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely patient records, progress notes, and other clinical documentation in accordance with professional and hospital standards.
- Participate in regular clinical supervision, case conferences, and team meetings to review cases and enhance professional development.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of mental health programs, initiatives, and community outreach efforts.
- Adhere strictly to professional ethical guidelines, legal requirements, and hospital policies and procedures.
- Engage in continuous professional development and training to stay current with best practices in psychology and mental health.
Required Skills
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Current professional licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Psychologist in Jamaica.
- Minimum of 3 years of post-licensure clinical experience in mental health or counseling settings, preferably within a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Proficiency in administering, scoring, and interpreting a broad range of psychological assessment tools.
- Demonstrated expertise in various psychotherapeutic modalities and evidence-based interventions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex psychological concepts clearly.
- Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations and colleagues.
- Exceptional empathy, patience, active listening skills, and a non-judgmental approach to patient care.
- Proven crisis intervention and risk assessment skills.
- Commitment to ethical practice and patient confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working specifically within a public hospital or community mental health setting in Jamaica.
- Specialization or advanced training in specific areas such as trauma-informed care, addiction psychology, child and adolescent psychology, or geriatric psychology.
- Fluency in local dialects or other languages relevant to the patient population.
- Experience with telepsychology or remote counseling services.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, research, and contributing to the body of psychological knowledge.
- Prior experience in supervising or mentoring junior psychologists or trainees.
