Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures in line with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees and contractors, covering topics such as hazard identification, emergency procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed safety reports, records, and statistics for management review and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead and participate in safety meetings, promoting open communication and employee engagement on HSE matters.
  • Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and readily available for use.
  • Collaborate with operational teams to integrate safety measures into daily work processes and project planning.
  • Stay updated on relevant HSE legislation, industry standards, and best practices to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Manage and coordinate emergency response plans and drills.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment (preferably heavy industry).
  • Thorough knowledge of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, local Nigerian standards).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for incident investigation and risk assessment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid professional safety certification (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Additional certifications such as Lead Auditor for ISO 45001/14001.
  • Experience in cement manufacturing or a similar heavy industrial setting.
  • Ability to speak local languages relevant to Calabar (e.g., Efik, Ibibio).
