Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures in line with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Organize and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees and contractors, covering topics such as hazard identification, emergency procedures, and safe work practices.
- Prepare and maintain detailed safety reports, records, and statistics for management review and regulatory compliance.
- Lead and participate in safety meetings, promoting open communication and employee engagement on HSE matters.
- Ensure all safety equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and readily available for use.
- Collaborate with operational teams to integrate safety measures into daily work processes and project planning.
- Stay updated on relevant HSE legislation, industry standards, and best practices to ensure continuous improvement.
- Manage and coordinate emergency response plans and drills.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer in an industrial or manufacturing environment (preferably heavy industry).
- Thorough knowledge of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA, local Nigerian standards).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage at all levels.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for incident investigation and risk assessment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid professional safety certification (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Additional certifications such as Lead Auditor for ISO 45001/14001.
- Experience in cement manufacturing or a similar heavy industrial setting.
- Ability to speak local languages relevant to Calabar (e.g., Efik, Ibibio).
