Job Description
Veritas University, Abuja is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Plumber to join our dedicated Facilities Management team. This full-time, on-site role is critical to maintaining the operational efficiency and comfort of our university campus. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of all plumbing systems, fixtures, and components across our academic buildings, administrative offices, student residences, and other campus facilities. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong understanding of various plumbing codes, safety regulations, and best practices. You will perform routine inspections, respond to emergency calls, and execute planned maintenance tasks to ensure continuous functionality and prevent disruptions. We are looking for someone who can work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, demonstrating excellent problem-solving abilities and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship. Your expertise will directly contribute to creating a safe, functional, and conducive environment for our students, faculty, and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including pipes, fittings, valves, drainage systems, and fixtures (toilets, sinks, showers, water heaters) across the university campus.
- Conduct routine inspections of plumbing systems to identify potential issues, perform preventative maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Respond promptly to plumbing emergencies, such as leaks, blockages, burst pipes, and water supply interruptions, diagnosing problems accurately and implementing effective solutions.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and plumbing diagrams to ensure accurate installation and repair work.
- Operate various plumbing tools and equipment safely and efficiently, including pipe cutters, threaders, wrenches, and drain cleaning machines.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with local plumbing codes, health and safety regulations, and university policies.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used and time spent.
- Advise on and procure necessary plumbing materials and supplies, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Collaborate with other facilities management staff and contractors on larger projects or complex issues.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior plumbing assistants or apprentices as needed.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a skilled plumber in a maintenance role.
- Proficiency in installing, repairing, and maintaining various plumbing systems and fixtures.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing codes, safety standards, and best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects, bending, and working in confined spaces.
- Valid trade certification or relevant plumbing license (e.g., City & Guilds, NABTEB, etc.).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- OND/HND in Plumbing, Building Technology, or a related field.
- Experience working in an institutional setting (e.g., university, hospital, large residential complex).
- Knowledge of water treatment systems and sewage disposal systems.
- Familiarity with energy-efficient plumbing solutions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
