Yorkshire Live is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Reporter – News & Field to join our dynamic team covering Crystal Peaks and the wider Sheffield area. This is a unique opportunity to be the eyes and ears of your community, breaking stories that resonate with local residents, uncovering hidden gems, and holding local institutions to account.
As a Reporter, you’ll be a frontline storyteller, spending significant time out in the field, building contacts, attending community events, council meetings, and court proceedings. You’ll be responsible for identifying, researching, and writing compelling news stories, features, and live blogs that capture the essence of Crystal Peaks life. From hard-hitting investigations to uplifting human interest pieces, your work will directly impact our growing readership, delivering content that is both informative and engaging. We’re looking for someone who can thrive in a fast-paced news environment, capable of working independently and as part of a collaborative team. You must possess a keen eye for detail, excellent news judgment, and a commitment to accuracy and ethical journalism. Key Responsibilities
- Identify, research, and report on a wide range of news stories relevant to Crystal Peaks and the wider Sheffield community.
- Cultivate and maintain a strong network of contacts within the community, including local authorities, emergency services, businesses, and residents.
- Attend press conferences, community events, court hearings, council meetings, and other key gatherings to gather information.
- Conduct interviews, both in-person and remotely, with sources from all walks of life.
- Write accurate, engaging, and well-researched news articles, features, and live blogs for online publication under tight deadlines.
- Utilize social media and digital tools to break news, engage with readers, and gather story leads.
- Generate original content ideas and proactively pursue exclusive stories.
- Collaborate with editors, photographers, and videographers to produce multimedia content.
- Ensure all content adheres to journalistic ethics, legal standards, and company guidelines.
- Monitor local news sources, police logs, and social media for breaking news opportunities.
Required Skills
- NCTJ qualified or equivalent journalism qualification.
- Proven experience as a reporter or journalist, preferably within a local or regional news environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with impeccable grammar and spelling.
- Strong news judgment and an ability to identify compelling stories.
- Proficiency in using social media for newsgathering and dissemination.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a car.
- Proficiency in basic digital tools and content management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with multimedia storytelling (e.g., video editing, podcasting).
- Knowledge of media law and IPSO code of practice.
- Understanding of SEO best practices for digital content.
- A strong portfolio showcasing diverse news reporting.
