As a Seaport Operations Assistant, you will work closely with terminal managers, stevedores, shipping agents, and various port stakeholders to oversee and facilitate cargo handling, vessel berthing, and staff deployment. Your day-to-day will involve monitoring operational activities, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations and operational procedures, and maintaining accurate records of movements and resources. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily planning and execution of marine terminal operations, including vessel berthing, un-berthing, cargo loading, and unloading.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of handling staff (stevedores, equipment operators) to ensure efficient and safe cargo movement.
  • Monitor adherence to safety regulations and operational procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of vessel movements, cargo manifests, equipment usage, and staff attendance.
  • Liaise with shipping agents, customs officials, and other port stakeholders to ensure smooth operational flow and resolve issues.
  • Inspect incoming and outgoing cargo for damages, discrepancies, and proper documentation.
  • Assist in the deployment and tracking of port equipment, ensuring optimal utilization and maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare daily operational reports and communicate status updates to the operations management team.
  • Respond to operational incidents and emergencies, following established protocols to minimize disruptions.
  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiency improvements and contribute to the implementation of new procedures.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor's Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Maritime Studies, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in port operations, logistics, or a marine terminal environment.
  • Strong understanding of port safety regulations and international maritime guidelines (e.g., ISPS Code).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment, including shift work and weekends when required.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to operational challenges.
  • Physical fitness to withstand the demands of a port environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certification in Port Operations, Maritime Logistics, or Project Management.
  • Knowledge of port management systems or terminal operating systems (TOS).
  • Familiarity with container handling, bulk cargo operations, and general cargo management.
  • Experience with incident reporting and emergency response protocols in a maritime setting.
