Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Lab Technician to join our Diagnostic Testing team at NHS Grampian in Bridge of Dee, Aberdeen. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in supporting our diagnostic services, performing a variety of laboratory tests and analyses that contribute directly to accurate patient diagnoses and effective treatment plans. Key Responsibilities
- Perform a range of diagnostic tests and analyses on biological samples (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) following established protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Prepare samples for analysis, including labelling, aliquoting, and processing, ensuring sample integrity and traceability.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain various laboratory instruments and equipment, performing routine quality control checks.
- Accurately record and document test results, observations, and quality control data in laboratory information systems.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, COSHH guidelines, and waste disposal procedures within the laboratory.
- Assist with inventory management, stock rotation, and ordering of reagents and consumables to ensure continuous lab operation.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs to maintain high standards of testing accuracy and reliability.
- Troubleshoot technical issues with equipment and assays, escalating complex problems to senior staff as necessary.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, including decontamination of workstations and equipment.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the lab.
Required Skills
- HNC/HND in Biomedical Science, Applied Science, or a related scientific discipline.
- Proven experience working in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory techniques and operating analytical instrumentation.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of laboratory work and data recording.
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures.
- Ability to follow complex protocols and Standard Operating Procedures precisely.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot minor technical issues.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with colleagues and reporting data.
- Competent in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and standard office software.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and data security.
Preferred Qualifications
- BSc in Biomedical Science (or equivalent degree).
- Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist (if applicable to the specific role).
- Experience with specific diagnostic platforms or specialised testing methodologies.
- Knowledge of NHS policies and procedures relevant to laboratory operations.
