Job Description

Seplat Energy is actively seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Engineer Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Calabar. This pivotal role is essential for maintaining and enhancing our robust safety culture across all engineering operations. As an Engineer Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in ensuring full compliance with national and international health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations, as well as Seplat’s stringent internal safety policies and procedures. You will be responsible for identifying potential hazards, assessing risks, and developing effective mitigation strategies to safeguard our personnel, assets, and the environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive HSE programs, policies, and procedures in line with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments of all engineering activities, equipment, and facilities to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes, and implementing preventative measures to avoid recurrence.
  • Deliver engaging and effective safety training sessions and workshops for employees and contractors to foster a strong safety-first mindset and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records of all safety-related activities, incidents, training, and compliance reports, preparing detailed analyses and recommendations for management.
  • Advise management on emerging safety trends, regulations, and technologies to continuously improve safety performance and integrate new solutions.
  • Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure that all engineering projects and operations adhere to established safety standards from conception to completion.
  • Promote a culture of health, safety, and environmental awareness among all personnel, encouraging active participation in safety initiatives and reporting.
  • Ensure the availability and proper maintenance of safety equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response gear, and first aid supplies.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (e.g., Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical, Civil) or relevant technical field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in an HSE role within the oil and gas or heavy industrial sector.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian and international HSE regulations, standards, and best practices (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH, IOSH).
  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and safety audits.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage diverse teams.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CHSP, ISO 45001 Lead Auditor).
  • Master's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with HSE management systems implementation and maintenance.
