Job Description
The University of Calabar is seeking an accomplished, visionary, and compassionate individual to serve as the Dean of Students. This critical leadership role is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the overall student experience, ensuring a supportive and engaging environment that promotes academic success, personal growth, and well-being. The Dean of Students will be at the forefront of student affairs, acting as a key advocate for students and a liaison between students, faculty, and administration. Your primary mission will be to foster a positive and inclusive campus culture, develop and implement student support services, and uphold the university’s values and disciplinary standards.
This role demands a leader with a deep understanding of student development theories, proven expertise in conflict resolution, and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. You will guide the strategic direction of various student-centred departments, including student counselling, career services, housing, orientation programs, and student organizations. The Dean will also play a crucial role in developing and enforcing university policies related to student conduct, ensuring fairness, transparency, and consistency. A significant part of this position involves crisis management, responding effectively to student emergencies, and providing guidance during challenging situations. You will work collaboratively with academic deans, department heads, and other university stakeholders to integrate student life initiatives with academic goals, creating a seamless and enriching educational journey for all students at the University of Calabar.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all student affairs functions, including student conduct, counselling, health services, career development, and student activities.
- Develop, implement, and enforce university policies related to student conduct and discipline, ensuring a fair and consistent application of rules.
- Oversee student welfare programs, crisis intervention, and emergency response, providing support and resources to students in need.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe campus environment that celebrates diversity and encourages student engagement.
- Advise the Vice-Chancellor and other senior administrators on matters related to student life, trends, and concerns.
- Manage the budget and resources for the Student Affairs division, ensuring efficient and effective utilization.
- Collaborate with academic departments, faculty, and staff to integrate student life programs with the university's academic mission.
- Lead and mentor a team of student affairs professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
- Represent the university at internal and external events, serving as a primary spokesperson for student issues.

Preferred Qualifications
- A Doctorate degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Affairs, or a related field.
- Membership in relevant professional associations (e.g., NASPA, ACPA).
- Experience in a federal university system or a similar large-scale educational institution.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and institutional accreditation processes.
