Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Music Teacher to join our vibrant team at Caritas Gemena. This rewarding role involves designing and delivering engaging instrument lessons to children and youth within our community programs. The successful candidate will inspire a love for music, cultivate artistic skills, and contribute to the overall cultural enrichment of participants. You will be responsible for teaching a variety of instruments (e.g., guitar, keyboard, traditional percussion, voice) in both individual and group settings, adapting your teaching methods to diverse age groups and skill levels, ranging from beginner to intermediate. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and engaging music curriculum for various instruments, suitable for different age groups (6-18 years) and skill levels.
  • Conduct effective and inspiring individual and group music lessons, ensuring a positive and productive learning atmosphere.
  • Assess student progress regularly, provide constructive feedback, and adapt teaching methods to foster continuous improvement and cater to diverse learning styles.
  • Organize and prepare students for regular performances, recitals, and community cultural events to showcase their talents and build confidence.
  • Maintain instruments and ensure the music learning environment is safe, clean, organized, and conducive to optimal learning.
  • Collaborate actively with other program staff and community leaders to integrate music education into broader youth development and social-emotional learning initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with students, parents, and colleagues regarding student progress, program activities, and any concerns.
  • Promote Caritas's core values of respect, compassion, integrity, and community spirit through musical engagement and role-modeling.
  • Contribute to the procurement, inventory management, and maintenance of musical instruments and educational resources.
  • Stay updated on best practices in music education and continuously seek opportunities for professional growth.

Required Skills

  • Proven proficiency and strong pedagogical skills in teaching at least two musical instruments (e.g., guitar, keyboard, drums, traditional instruments, voice).
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience teaching music to children and/or youth in a formal or informal educational setting.
  • Solid understanding of music theory, ear training, rhythm, and age-appropriate music pedagogy.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a classroom effectively.
  • Demonstrated patience, creativity, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for inspiring young musicians.
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Fluency in French; proficiency in Lingala or other local languages is a significant advantage.
  • Cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of the local context and community in Gemena.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Music, Music Education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working specifically within non-profit organizations, community centers, or development projects.
  • Familiarity with and ability to teach traditional Congolese music and indigenous instruments.
  • Ability to teach a wider range of instruments beyond the minimum requirement.
  • Certification in a recognized music teaching methodology (e.g., Orff, Kodaly, Suzuki).
  • Proven experience in organizing, directing, and conducting musical performances or ensembles.
