Mercat Tours is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Part-Time Tour Guide to lead our new series of “City & Heritage Walks” in the charming and historically rich town of Musselburgh, Edinburgh. This unique opportunity calls for an individual passionate about Musselburgh’s distinct heritage, from its Roman origins and medieval past to its industrial legacy and picturesque waterfront.
As a Tour Guide, you will be the face of our heritage experience, crafting compelling narratives that transport visitors through time. Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging and informative walking tours of Musselburgh’s historic sites and landmarks.
- Develop and deliver compelling narratives, incorporating historical facts, local folklore, and captivating anecdotes.
- Conduct thorough research to ensure accuracy and depth in tour content.
- Interact with diverse groups of visitors, answering questions and adapting tour delivery to different interests and age groups.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all tour participants throughout the duration of the walk.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service, representing Mercat Tours positively.
- Manage group dynamics effectively, ensuring an inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone.
- Provide relevant practical information, such as directions, local amenities, and historical context.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in public speaking, presenting, or performance.
- Excellent storytelling and communication skills, with the ability to captivate an audience.
- Strong knowledge of Scottish history, particularly the history of Musselburgh and the wider Edinburgh area.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and a friendly, approachable demeanor.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and stand/walk for extended periods.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a tour guide or heritage interpreter.
- A degree or background in History, Scottish Studies, Archaeology, or a related field.
