Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Tailor specializing in Fashion & Design to join our dynamic team in Beni, North Kivu Province. This role is crucial for our livelihood and vocational training initiatives, as well as for meeting internal textile needs. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional craftsmanship, a keen eye for detail, and a creative flair for design. You will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from creating original garments and accessories for community projects to altering and repairing existing items, potentially including uniforms or promotional materials. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your technical expertise in tailoring and design within a humanitarian context, directly contributing to skill-building workshops, product development for local markets, and fostering self-reliance within vulnerable communities. You will be instrumental in teaching modern tailoring techniques, supervising trainees, and ensuring high-quality production standards. Key Responsibilities
- Design and create original garments, accessories, and textile products based on project requirements or client specifications.
- Perform precise cutting, sewing, and finishing of various fabrics and materials using industrial and domestic sewing machines.
- Conduct fittings, alterations, and repairs of clothing and textile items to ensure perfect fit and quality.
- Develop patterns and samples for new designs, ensuring efficiency and material optimization.
- Provide technical guidance and training to program participants in tailoring and fashion design techniques.
- Manage and maintain tailoring equipment, ensuring they are in optimal working condition.
- Oversee inventory of fabrics, notions, and supplies, ensuring timely procurement and efficient use.
- Implement quality control measures to ensure all finished products meet required standards.
- Collaborate with project managers and community leaders to identify textile-related needs and opportunities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience as a Tailor or Seamstress.
- Proficiency in operating industrial and domestic sewing machines, overlockers, and other tailoring equipment.
- Expert knowledge of garment construction, pattern making, cutting, and finishing techniques.
- Strong understanding of various fabric types, their properties, and suitable handling methods.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to interpret design sketches and verbal instructions accurately.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability to different tailoring challenges.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills for measurements and record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal qualification or certification in Tailoring, Fashion Design, or Textile Arts.
- Experience in training or mentoring apprentices or students in tailoring.
- Familiarity with local fashion trends and cultural textile preferences.
- Ability to speak Swahili or other local languages prevalent in North Kivu.
- Experience working within an NGO or community development setting.
- Proficiency in basic sketching or design software (e.g., for creating conceptual designs).
