Job Description

As Airport Ground Staff specializing in Boarding & Baggage Handling at Bristol Airport, you will be a vital and indispensable part of our operational team, directly impacting both the passenger experience and overall flight efficiency. Your primary duties will encompass the safe, secure, and highly efficient handling of passenger luggage and cargo, from the moment it is checked in until it is loaded onto the aircraft, and subsequently unloaded upon arrival. You will also play a crucial role in assisting passengers with the boarding and disembarkation processes, ensuring a smooth and pleasant journey. This comprehensive role requires the operation of specialized airport ground support equipment (GSE), strict adherence to all safety and security protocols, and a collaborative spirit to work effectively with airline representatives and other ground staff to meet stringent turnaround times. This is a physically active position that demands excellent teamwork, a meticulous eye for detail, and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions to ensure every flight departs and arrives on schedule, with passenger belongings handled with the utmost care and precision.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently load and unload passenger baggage, cargo, and mail onto and from aircraft, utilizing appropriate ground support equipment and manual handling techniques.
- Operate a diverse range of ground support equipment (GSE), including pushback tugs, baggage loaders, belt loaders, and passenger steps, strictly adhering to all operational and safety guidelines.
- Perform accurate baggage sorting, tagging, and ensuring timely delivery to the correct aircraft or reclaim belts.
- Guide aircraft to and from parking stands using established marshalling procedures, maintaining constant vigilance and clear communication.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking the aircraft, providing a friendly and efficient service, and ensuring compliance with airline procedures.
- Conduct thorough pre-use checks on all assigned ground service equipment to ensure optimal operational safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with flight crews, airline staff, and other ground handling teams to ensure coordinated and efficient operations.
- Adhere strictly to all company, airline, and airport safety, security, and operational regulations and procedures.
- Work collaboratively within a fast-paced team environment to meet tight deadlines and contribute to on-time flight departures and arrivals.
- Promptly report any equipment malfunctions, incidents, or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
Required Skills
- Possession of a valid UK Driving Licence (essential for operating ground support equipment).
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays, in a 24/7 operation.
- Strong commitment to safety and security procedures and a proactive attitude towards maintaining a safe working environment.
- Excellent teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy items (up to 32kg) repeatedly and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a proactive, problem-solving approach.
- Must be able to pass a full 5-year verifiable background check and successfully obtain an Airside Pass.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in an airport environment, logistics, or a similar physically demanding role.
- Prior experience operating ground support equipment (GSE).
- Familiarity with airport operations, terminology, and health and safety regulations.
- Demonstrated customer service experience.
