Job Description
Hotel Horizon Uvira is actively seeking a skilled, passionate, and dedicated Gardener with a strong background in professional landscaping to join our esteemed team. This pivotal role involves the comprehensive maintenance, enhancement, and design of all green spaces across our hotel grounds, ensuring they consistently reflect our high standards for beauty, tranquility, and guest satisfaction. As our Gardener – Landscaping specialist, you will be the guardian of our botanical beauty, responsible for the full lifecycle care of all plants, trees, shrubs, and vibrant floral displays that adorn our property. This includes a wide array of duties, from precise routine watering, fertilization, and pruning to proactive pest and disease management using environmentally friendly practices, and enriching soil health to promote lush growth.
You will play a critical role in the aesthetic evolution of our outdoor areas, with opportunities to design and implement new garden features, introduce seasonal plantings, and cultivate vibrant, healthy landscapes that captivate our guests and harmoniously complement the hotel’s luxurious ambiance. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine gardening duties including planting, watering, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, hedge trimming, and mowing lawns to maintain pristine conditions.
- Design, install, and meticulously maintain new landscape features, flowerbeds, and horticultural displays in strict adherence to hotel aesthetic standards and guest experience goals.
- Monitor plant health diligently, accurately diagnose any issues, and implement appropriate pest and disease control measures, prioritizing organic and safe methods whenever possible.
- Operate and maintain a variety of gardening equipment and tools safely and efficiently, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and complex irrigation systems.
- Ensure the impeccable cleanliness and tidiness of all garden areas, pathways, outdoor seating areas, and public spaces, removing debris and ensuring safety.
- Implement and manage comprehensive irrigation schedules, ensuring optimal water usage and efficient hydration for all plant life across the property.
- Actively participate in seasonal planting projects and larger landscaping initiatives, contributing creative ideas and practical solutions for garden enhancements.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all gardening supplies, tools, and equipment, proactively reporting any needs for repair, replacement, or procurement to management.
- Strictly adhere to all established safety guidelines, environmental best practices, and local regulations in all gardening and landscaping activities.
- Collaborate effectively with the hotel management team on special event setups, outdoor décor, and any specific guest requests involving the outdoor spaces.
Required Skills
- Proven practical experience (minimum 2 years) as a Gardener or Landscaper in a professional setting, ideally within the hospitality industry or a similar high-standard environment.
- Solid knowledge of local plant species, advanced horticultural practices, soil science, and fundamental landscape design principles applicable to the region.
- Proficiency in safely operating and performing basic maintenance on various gardening tools and powered equipment.
- Strong understanding of modern irrigation systems, water conservation techniques, and their effective management.
- Ability to accurately identify and effectively treat common plant diseases, pests, and nutrient deficiencies.
- Exceptional physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions, including performing strenuous tasks and lifting heavy objects.
- Excellent attention to detail, a strong aesthetic sense, and a proactive, diligent work ethic.
- Basic proficiency in English or French for effective communication within the hotel team and understanding instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Vocational training or a formal certification in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Arboriculture, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience with sustainable gardening practices, organic landscaping, and environmental conservation initiatives.
- Ability to communicate effectively in Swahili or Lingala in addition to English/French to better engage with local team members and suppliers.
- Experience with plant propagation and nursery management.
