Job Description
We are seeking dedicated and highly skilled individuals to join our riverine fleet as Ship Crew members specializing in Navigation and Engine operations. Based in Lubao, Kasai Province, this critical role is integral to the safe and efficient transport of cargo and, at times, passengers across the Democratic Republic of Congo’s extensive inland waterways, particularly along the Kasai River. As a Ship Crew member, you will be responsible for upholding the highest standards of vessel operation, safety, and maintenance. This dual-focused role requires a keen eye for navigation, a strong understanding of marine engine systems, and an unwavering commitment to teamwork and compliance with all maritime regulations. You will be part of a close-knit team ensuring the continuous and reliable movement of essential goods, directly impacting the livelihoods and economic activities of countless communities. Key Responsibilities
- Perform watchkeeping duties in both navigation and engine compartments as required.
- Assist in the safe navigation of the vessel, including helmsmanship, lookout duties, and maintaining a proper navigation log.
- Execute mooring and unmooring operations, including handling ropes, anchors, and other deck equipment.
- Conduct routine checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on deck machinery and vessel structure.
- Monitor and operate main engines, auxiliary machinery, and associated systems, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
- Perform regular engine room rounds, record data, and report any anomalies or malfunctions to the Chief Engineer.
- Assist with bunkering operations, fuel management, and maintaining engine room cleanliness.
- Participate in all safety drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard) and maintain proficiency in emergency procedures and equipment.
- Ensure proper stowage, lashing, and securing of cargo in compliance with safety standards.
- Adhere strictly to all national and international maritime regulations, company policies, and environmental protection guidelines.
- Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and cleanliness in all crew areas.
- Foster a positive and collaborative working environment with fellow crew members.
- Report any safety hazards, incidents, or environmental concerns immediately.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in vessel navigation techniques and safe watchkeeping.
- Solid understanding of marine engine operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
- Strong adherence to safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Basic First Aid and Fire Fighting certification.
- Relevant Certificate of Competency for Inland Waterways (e.g., Able Seaman, River Engineer Aide).
- Experience in cargo handling and securing.
- Fluency in French or Lingala (essential for communication with local authorities and crew).
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a crew member on riverine vessels.
- Experience with specific engine types commonly used in river transport (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins).
- Advanced training in maritime safety and survival techniques.
- Knowledge of local navigation hazards and river conditions on the Kasai River.
- Ability to perform basic welding or fabrication repairs.
