Job Description

Are you a passionate, driven individual with a burgeoning leadership spirit and a deep commitment to global social justice? Oxfam New Zealand is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for an ‘Entry Level Country Director (Diretor Nacional)’ to join our dynamic team in Auckland. This distinctive role is designed for an aspiring leader to step into a director-level position, focusing on a specific, nascent program or initiative within a Portuguese-speaking country. While based in our Auckland office, you will play a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing a new footprint, contributing directly to Oxfam’s mission in a region where your impact can be profound.

This isn’t your typical Country Director role. We recognise that true leadership potential isn’t solely defined by years of experience. This entry-level directorship is a rare chance for someone with foundational skills, immense enthusiasm, and a strategic mindset to gain unparalleled experience in international development. You will be mentored by senior leadership within Oxfam New Zealand, providing a robust support structure as you navigate the complexities of program development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic oversight for your assigned portfolio. You will be instrumental in translating Oxfam’s global strategies into effective, localised actions, fostering partnerships, and ensuring our programs are culturally sensitive and impactful. This role is ideal for someone eager to learn, adapt, and make a tangible difference from day one, laying the groundwork for future growth and success in the humanitarian sector. We are looking for someone ready to embrace a challenge, champion our values, and lead with purpose in a critical global context.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of a strategic plan for a specific program initiative within a Portuguese-speaking country, under senior leadership guidance.
  • Assist in the oversight of program activities, ensuring alignment with Oxfam’s objectives and quality standards.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including local partners, government agencies, and community representatives in the target region.
  • Contribute to resource mobilisation efforts, including proposal writing and donor reporting, for the assigned program.
  • Monitor program progress, identify challenges, and propose adaptive solutions to ensure effective delivery.
  • Support the recruitment, supervision, and professional development of a small program team, either remotely or in-country (as applicable).
  • Ensure compliance with Oxfam’s operational policies, financial procedures, and safeguarding protocols.
  • Act as a primary liaison between the in-country program activities and Oxfam New Zealand’s headquarters.
  • Represent Oxfam New Zealand at relevant local and international forums, as required.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated leadership potential and ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic understanding of project management principles.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively in diverse environments.
  • Passion for humanitarian work and social justice.
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s values and principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in International Development, Social Sciences, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Some experience (volunteer or paid) in project coordination, community engagement, or international development.
  • Familiarity with the socio-political context of Portuguese-speaking countries.
  • Experience working with non-profit organisations or NGOs.
  • Knowledge of monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) frameworks.
