Job Description
This role offers a unique opportunity for a passionate and skilled Agricultural Officer to make a tangible impact on agricultural practices within the Kwilu Province. The successful candidate will be instrumental in implementing and overseeing agricultural development programs, focusing on both crop cultivation and livestock management. You will work closely with local farming communities, providing expert guidance, technical training, and support to enhance productivity, improve crop yields, and optimize animal husbandry practices. This position requires a proactive individual who can conduct thorough field assessments, identify challenges prevalent in local farming systems, and propose sustainable, context-appropriate solutions. You will be responsible for disseminating best practices, introducing innovative farming techniques, and meticulously monitoring the progress of various agricultural initiatives designed to uplift farmer livelihoods. The role also involves meticulous data collection, analysis, and comprehensive reporting to evaluate program effectiveness, measure impact, and inform future strategies for sustainable agricultural growth. By fostering strong, trust-based relationships with farmers, local leaders, and other stakeholders, you will contribute directly to the economic empowerment and food security of the region, aligning with PHC S.A.’s broader commitment to sustainable development in the DRC. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular field visits to local farms and communities to assess current agricultural practices and identify areas for improvement in both crop and livestock production.
- Develop, organize, and deliver tailored training programs and interactive workshops for farmers on topics such as sustainable crop rotation, integrated pest and disease management, soil fertility enhancement, quality seed selection, animal nutrition, modern breeding techniques, and disease prevention.
- Provide one-on-one technical advice and personalized extension services to farmers, assisting them in adopting improved farming methods and appropriate technologies.
- Monitor and rigorously evaluate the implementation and progress of agricultural projects, collecting accurate data on crop yields, livestock health, input usage, and overall farmer adoption rates and behavioral change.
- Prepare detailed and insightful reports on field activities, project progress, challenges encountered, and farmer feedback, contributing to comprehensive program evaluations and strategic planning.
- Facilitate the formation and strengthening of farmer groups and cooperatives to enhance collective learning, resource sharing, and market access.
- Assist in the procurement, quality control, and equitable distribution of essential agricultural inputs (e.g., improved seeds, appropriate fertilizers, high-quality livestock breeds) to project beneficiaries.
- Promote and advocate for environmentally sustainable agricultural practices, including agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and integrated natural resource management.
- Establish and manage demonstration plots and model farms to effectively showcase and prove the benefits of best practices in both crop and livestock management.
- Liaise effectively with local government agencies, relevant research institutions, other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community leaders to identify potential partnerships and leverage additional resources.
- Ensure strict compliance with PHC S.A.'s agricultural standards, environmental policies, and social responsibility guidelines in all project activities.
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Sciences, Animal Science, Rural Development, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in agricultural extension, farm management, or rural development, with a significant focus on both crop cultivation and livestock production.
- Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of tropical crop cultivation (e.g., cassava, maize, legumes, vegetables) and common livestock management practices in the DRC (e.g., poultry, goats, pigs, cattle).
- Excellent communication, public speaking, interpersonal, and training skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and effectively to diverse rural audiences.
- Proficiency in spoken and written French and Lingala (or other local languages widely prevalent in Kwilu Province) is essential.
- Proven ability to conduct systematic field assessments, accurately analyze agricultural data, and prepare comprehensive, data-driven reports.
- Possession of a valid motorcycle driving license and a strong willingness to travel extensively and frequently within Kwilu Province, often on challenging rural terrain.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with a proactive and innovative approach to addressing agricultural challenges.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant agricultural discipline (e.g., Agricultural Economics, Animal Production, Crop Science).
- Experience working with international NGOs, large agribusiness companies, or government agricultural programs in rural development contexts within Africa.
- In-depth knowledge of local agricultural policies, market dynamics, and value chains in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Familiarity with the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools for agricultural mapping, monitoring, and planning.
- Previous experience in agricultural value chain development and market linkage initiatives.
