Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Agricultural Extension Officer to join our dynamic team in Old GRA, Port Harcourt. This pivotal role involves working directly with farmers and rural communities to disseminate modern agricultural knowledge, techniques, and technologies. The Agricultural Extension Officer will be instrumental in bridging the gap between agricultural research and practical farm application, ensuring that local farmers adopt best practices that lead to improved yields, increased profitability, and sustainable farming systems. You will be responsible for conducting needs assessments, organizing training workshops, demonstrating new farming methods, and providing ongoing technical support. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular field visits to local farms to assess current agricultural practices and identify areas for improvement.
  • Organize and facilitate farmer training programs, workshops, and field demonstrations on best agricultural practices, crop management, pest control, and post-harvest handling.
  • Disseminate information on new agricultural technologies, improved crop varieties, and sustainable farming techniques.
  • Provide one-on-one technical advice and support to farmers on various aspects of crop cultivation, livestock management, and aquaculture.
  • Collect and analyze data on farm productivity, input usage, and market trends to inform program development.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on field activities, farmer progress, and challenges encountered.
  • Liaise with research institutions, government agencies, and other stakeholders to bring relevant agricultural solutions to farmers.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of extension activities on farmer livelihoods and agricultural output.
  • Promote the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and environmental conservation among farming communities.
  • Assist farmers in accessing necessary agricultural inputs, credit, and market linkages.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Extension, Crop Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in agricultural extension services or field-based agricultural development.
  • Strong knowledge of crop production, soil science, pest management, and farming systems relevant to the Nigerian context.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and at least one relevant local dialect (e.g., Ikwerre, Kalabari).
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office Suite).
  • Ability to work independently in rural settings and travel extensively within the operational area.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a practical approach to agricultural challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant agricultural discipline.
  • Certification in specific agricultural practices (e.g., organic farming, integrated pest management).
  • Experience with data collection and analysis tools specific to agricultural monitoring.
  • Knowledge of agribusiness principles and value chain development.
  • Previous experience working with NGOs or international development organizations in the agricultural sector.
