Job Description
Chevron is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Safety Officer for an immediate hiring opportunity within our dynamic operations located in the Ladipo Market area of Mushin, Lagos. This critical role is integral to upholding Chevron’s unwavering commitment to Health, Environment, and Safety (HES) excellence. As a Safety Officer, you will be at the forefront of ensuring all operational activities adhere strictly to both Chevron’s stringent global HES policies and local Nigerian regulatory requirements. Your expertise will be crucial in fostering a proactive safety culture, preventing incidents, and ensuring a secure working environment for all personnel and contractors.
Your primary responsibilities will involve the development, implementation, and rigorous enforcement of HES procedures and protocols across various work sites within our operational footprint. You will conduct comprehensive risk assessments, lead thorough safety inspections, and perform meticulous audits to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues. A key aspect of this role is the ability to promptly investigate all incidents, near-misses, and accidents, determining root causes, and recommending effective corrective and preventative actions to avoid recurrence. You will also be responsible for preparing detailed HES reports, analyzing trends, and presenting findings to management.
Beyond compliance and reactive measures, you will champion proactive safety initiatives. This includes designing and delivering engaging safety training programs to enhance awareness and competency among employees and contractors on topics such as emergency preparedness, confined space entry, working at heights, and hazardous material handling. You will play a pivotal role in promoting a strong safety-first mindset, encouraging active participation from all team members in identifying and mitigating risks. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, acting as a trusted advisor on all HES matters. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor Health, Environment, and Safety (HES) policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with HES standards and regulations.
- Investigate all incidents, near-misses, and accidents, determine root causes, and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Deliver comprehensive safety training programs for employees and contractors on various HES topics.
- Ensure strict adherence to local and international HES regulations, including OSHA, ISO 45001, and Nigerian statutory requirements.
- Prepare detailed HES reports, analyze safety performance data, and report findings to management.
- Advise management on HES best practices and potential areas for improvement.
- Coordinate emergency response drills and ensure the availability and readiness of safety equipment.
- Promote a strong safety culture through awareness campaigns and continuous communication.
- Conduct risk assessments for new projects, processes, and equipment.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 4 years (48 months) proven experience as a Safety Officer or similar HES role, preferably in a heavy industrial or oil & gas environment.
- Thorough knowledge of HES regulations, policies, and procedures (e.g., OSHA, local Nigerian HES laws).
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, safety inspections, and incident investigations.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Internationally recognized HES certifications such as NEBOSH IGC/Diploma or IOSH Managing Safely.
- Experience with HES management systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Familiarity with environmental management practices and sustainability initiatives.
- Prior experience working with multinational companies or in the energy sector.
