Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during comprehensive examinations, surgical procedures, and various medical treatments.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and other prescribed treatments accurately as directed by the supervising veterinarian.
- Prepare and meticulously maintain surgical suites, ensuring complete sterility and optimal functionality of all equipment.
- Perform a range of diagnostic tests, including blood work, urinalysis, fecal examinations, and radiography.
- Monitor animals diligently during and after anesthesia, accurately documenting vital signs, recovery progress, and any observations.
- Provide attentive nursing care for hospitalized animals, including feeding, hygiene, and ensuring their comfort.
- Educate pet owners comprehensively on animal care best practices, post-operative instructions, and preventative medicine strategies.
- Maintain accurate and thorough patient records, ensuring proper documentation of all services rendered and medical notes.
- Handle and restrain animals safely, gently, and humanely for examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Manage inventory of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment, ensuring availability and proper storage.
- Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of clinic facilities, kennels, examination rooms, and surgical areas.
- Assist with front desk duties such as scheduling appointments, handling client inquiries, and processing payments when required.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in safe and humane animal handling and restraint techniques.
- Solid knowledge of veterinary medical terminology, common procedures, and basic pharmacology.
- Competence in performing common laboratory tests (e.g., CBC, urinalysis, fecal exams, blood smears).
- Ability to operate and maintain veterinary equipment (e.g., X-ray machines, anesthetic monitors, IV pumps).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with pet owners and team members.
- Excellent organizational and meticulous record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced, demanding veterinary environment.
- Demonstrable compassion, empathy, and patience for animals and their owners.
- Basic computer literacy for patient record management and communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Veterinary Technician (e.g., AHT, RVT if applicable, or equivalent professional training/diploma).
- Experience working with a diverse variety of animal species (e.g., small animals, exotics, poultry).
- Familiarity with veterinary practice management software (e.g., Cornerstone, Idexx VetConnect).
- Ability to perform basic dental prophylaxis under veterinary supervision.
- Experience in emergency and critical care situations within a veterinary setting.
