Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, prepare, and analyze samples of crude oil, refined petroleum products, gases, water, and other materials using established laboratory procedures and analytical instrumentation.
  • Perform various chemical and physical tests, including but not limited to, distillation, flash point, viscosity, density, sulfur content, octane number, and compositional analysis (e.g., GC, HPLC).
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment such as gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers, spectrophotometers, and other advanced analytical instruments.
  • Record, interpret, and report analytical results accurately and promptly, ensuring all data is meticulously documented and complies with internal and external quality standards.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, troubleshoot malfunctions, and ensure all instruments are in optimal working condition.
  • Implement and adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies and procedures within the laboratory, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Participate in inter-laboratory proficiency testing programs and internal quality control checks to maintain accreditation and ensure data reliability.
  • Assist in the development and validation of new analytical methods and procedures as required.
  • Maintain an organized and clean laboratory workspace, ensuring efficient sample flow and adherence to good laboratory practices (GLP).
  • Collaborate effectively with production, operations, and quality assurance teams to support product quality and process optimization efforts.

Required Skills

  • B.Sc. or HND in Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as a Laboratory Analyst, preferably within the oil & gas, petrochemical, or a related industrial laboratory environment.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining standard laboratory equipment and advanced analytical instrumentation (e.g., GC, HPLC, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRF).
  • Strong understanding of petroleum product testing standards (e.g., ASTM, IP, ISO) and quality control methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Solid knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, hazardous waste management, and environmental compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a demanding and dynamic environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Certification in Quality Assurance/Quality Control or relevant analytical techniques.
  • Experience with accreditation standards such as ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex analytical issues and perform method validation.
