Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Alimosho, Lagos. As a Safety Officer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and monitoring our Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management systems across our project sites. This critical role involves ensuring full compliance with all local and international safety regulations, company policies, and best practices. You will be responsible for conducting thorough risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, and implementing effective control measures to prevent accidents and promote a culture of safety among all personnel. Your day-to-day activities will include regular site inspections, safety audits, incident investigations, and the delivery of comprehensive safety training programs. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of construction safety protocols, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers, site engineers, and workers. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective HSE management systems and procedures in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues, recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Perform comprehensive risk assessments for various project activities and propose mitigation strategies.
- Investigate all incidents, accidents, and near-misses, determining root causes and recommending measures to prevent recurrence.
- Organize and deliver safety induction training, toolbox talks, and other relevant HSE training programs for employees and contractors.
- Ensure all site personnel are aware of and adhere to safety rules and procedures.
- Monitor the proper use and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all sites.
- Prepare and submit periodic HSE reports, including incident statistics, safety performance, and compliance status.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, external auditors, and client representatives on HSE matters.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through continuous communication and engagement with all levels of staff.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HSE legislation, standards, and best practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer, preferably in the construction industry.
- In-depth knowledge of local and international HSE regulations (e.g., OSHA, ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
- Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or equivalent certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Lead Auditor certification for ISO 45001 or ISO 14001.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with HSE software and management systems.
- Membership in a recognized professional safety organization (e.g., ISPON).
