Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and cook a variety of nutritious, well-balanced meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring high standards of presentation and taste.
  • Cater to diverse dietary requirements, allergies, intolerances, and preferences, including diabetic, pureed, soft, and fortified diets, in consultation with residents and care staff.
  • Maintain impeccable standards of kitchen hygiene, cleanliness, and food safety in accordance with HACCP principles and all relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Manage stock rotation, inventory levels, and order supplies efficiently, minimising waste and adhering to budget guidelines.
  • Oversee the proper use and maintenance of all kitchen equipment, reporting any faults or issues promptly.
  • Work collaboratively with the care team to ensure residents' nutritional needs are met and mealtime experiences are positive.
  • Engage with residents to understand their preferences and gather feedback on menu choices, striving for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with budgeting for food provisions and controlling kitchen costs effectively.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, particularly those related to food handling, health and safety, and infection control.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a cook in a professional kitchen environment, preferably within a care home, hospital, or similar residential setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of food safety, hygiene regulations (e.g., HACCP), and allergen management.
  • Ability to plan and adapt menus to meet a wide range of dietary requirements and preferences.
  • Excellent culinary skills, including cooking techniques, presentation, and portion control.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, capable of working efficiently in a busy kitchen.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and resident-focused approach.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the nutritional needs of older adults.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Catering & Hospitality or equivalent professional cooking qualification.
  • Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2 or above.
  • Experience in budgeting and stock control.
  • A current enhanced DBS certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
